In Memory of Hunter Harris

William "Hunter" Harris, Jr.

William “Hunter” Harris, Jr., age 60, husband of Michelle Lynn Swope of Middlebrook, Virginia, passed away Friday, April 25, 2025 at Blue Ridge Christian Home in Raphine.

Born September 18, 1964 in Richmond, he was a son of the late William “Bill” Hunter and Maureen Jane (Jones) Harris.

A man of faith, Hunter was baptized in and held membership with Pines Chapel Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Fork Union Military Academy in May of 1983 and would go on to attend Ferrum College. Known for his strong work ethic, he had formerly worked as a lumber grader and owned and operated H & M Fencing. Additionally, Hunter, alongside his wife, operated Benson Hollow Farm raising livestock and poultry. 

When not at work on the farm, Hunter enjoyed time spent bird hunting, reading and studying military history, and most certainly, attending bible study. He was also an ardent supporter and fan of Riverheads High School football, and was known as a friend to animals of all types, who held a special place in his heart for black labs.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Paul Hunter Harris and Nancy Harris; as well as his service dog, Oscar and his beloved lab, Mikey.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a sister, Margaret Taylor and her husband, Lynn of Hanover County; a nephew, Philip Taylor and his wife, Rebekah and their children, Chloe and Abigail, all of Hanover County; a niece, Alyson Mancini and her husband, Michael and their children, Rocco and Hunter of North Las Vegas, NV; his mother-in-law, Judy Swope of Mt. Crawford; a brother-in-law, Mike Swope and his wife, Kim of Bridgewater; two godsons, Markus and Lukas Tobin of Staunton; as well as an aunt; many additional nieces; and cousins dear to him.  

The staff of Coffman Funeral Home will receive those wishing to pay their respects throughout the day on Saturday, May 3, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, May 4, 2025 in Mt. Crawford Cemetery in Rockingham County with Pastor Derek Almarode officiating.

Serving as active pallbearers are Russell Seneff, Chris Harris, Butch Robaugh, Rodney Harris, David Hemp, and Dicky Arbaugh.

The family would like to express a special “thank you” to the staff of Blue Ridge Christian Home, as well as to Dr. Rob Marsh, Cindy Almarode, and staff for their loving care given to Hunter during his illness.
